Synopsis : Favorite Foods of the Dictator is a haunting and facinating documentary which illustrates the banality of evil by creating intimate portraits of five of the last century’s most reviled dictators. The film unveils the personal lives of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Francisco Franco and Mao Tse Tung. In the film We learn about the private and mundane details of their everyday lives -- their favorite foods, films, habits and sexual preferences. Throughout the film their public lives and the roles they played in history are ignored in favour of a minute exploration of them as "normal human beings" and it is through this device that the horror of their actions become revealed. Indeed it their apparent normality, or near normality, that is most shoking and the way they are just like us.
Favorite Foods of the Dictator addresses this horror from a completely different angle. Irony and even occasional humor are sprinkled throughout the documentary. This darkly poetic film is based entirely on fact, creatively combining direct quotes and biographical research. Though based on historical figures, the film is contemporary in its implications and ultimately invites the viewer to confront the nature of evil.
